Can someone help me out here please? My brother says that the computer accesses data from the hard drive by going through the CPU first. Is he right? If not can someone explain how it does accesses data on a hard drive?

The CPU has to send instructions and an address to read the data from the Hard Disk.

The data itself may or may not go through the CPU, depending on what is to be done with it – it might simply be moved to a new location in memory.
